Panthers alum, Chris Draft, and United Way of Transylvania County will host a new virtual classroom experience called Character Playbook LIVE on Wednesday, October 11 at Brevard Middle School and Brevard Academy. Character Playbook LIVE is part of an NFL-wide initiative to engage middle school students in important conversations about understanding and managing emotions, effective communication, conflict resolution and decision-making.
Chris Draft will virtually join students from 11 North Carolina schools in their classroom to highlight concepts in the Character PlaybookTM modules. The goal is to connect challenges in students’ lives with sports character, and specifically football.
“I’m excited that Brevard Academy’s sixth grade students were chosen to participate in this live character education event. Many of our students are big NFL fans, and we welcome the opportunity to help them correlate good sportsmanship with good citizenship,” said Ted Duncan, Brevard Academy Director.
“Brevard Middle School is honored to have been selected for this character education program. Students in two of our seventh grade classrooms will interact with Chris Draft via the magic of the internet…I think it’s impossible to overstate the importance of role models in a youth’s development,” stated Jeff Bailey, Brevard Middle School Principal.
Character PlaybookTM is a digital character education program powered by digital learning innovator EVERFI Inc. and presented by the NFL and United Way. In its first year, the program helped 13,859 North Carolina middle school students in 64 schools learn how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships. Students completed 25,100 hours of learning, leading to increased understanding of key social and emotional topics.
The data around social emotional learning indicates a growing need in classrooms. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning found that students who participated in social and emotional learning programs saw an 11 percentile point gain in achievement in social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior and academic performance. Character Playbook TM addresses these issues head on and supports students in building the skills they need to be successful contributors to their communities.
The NFL and United Way invite fans and supporters to get involved in this ground-breaking effort through a new fundraising initiative designed to expand Character PlaybookTM even further. More details can be found at www.United2Win.com.
