VOLUNTEERS DEDICATE A DAY OF ACTION TO HELP NEIGHBORS

Michael Collins, director, and Phillip Bills, volunteer, of Bread of Life accept “Happy At Home” kits for distribution to their home delivery clients from Kaye Walker, Data Manager for United Way of Transylvania County.

Linda Fluck, Director of Transylvania Home Care and Hospice moves “Happy at Home” kits into a storage area to wait for distribution to clients.

Mike Mossbarger, a member of Friends of Silvermont, hands a wash cloth and a silk flower to Lorraine Egerton, a volunteer from College Walk Community, to put in a “Happy At Home” kit she is filling.

More than 30 volunteers fill the hallway at Transylvania Vocational Services to pack the “Happy At Home” kits for United Way’s Day of Action 2016.

Volunteers took the roles of “trick-or-treaters” or “home owners” to efficiently fill the “Happy At Home” kits with items for people who have limited community access.

Tuesday, June 21, for United Way’s Day of Action 2016, more than 30 local volunteers assembled 360 “Happy At Home” basic needs kits for local individuals with limited mobility or community access. The kits will be distributed through Transylvania Home Care and Hospice, Transylvania Adult Day Services, Silvermont Opportunity Center, Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS), Meals on Wheels, and Bread of Life deliveries.

“United Way is proud to be able to partner with so many great local agencies to put the grant from Depend to good use right here in our county—over $4,000 worth of important supplies are going directly to local residents,” explains Barbara Marr, United Way of Transylvania County’s Community Resources Director.

Volunteers from United Way of Transylvania County (UWTC), College Walk, TVS, and Silvermont Opportunity Center met at TVS to put the kits together. Each kit contains personal and home items including toilet tissue, facial tissue, paper towels, soaps, toothbrushes, wash cloths, paper and pen, and a silk flower.

“We picked the kit contents to address physical needs of people who have limited access to the community and to strengthen their connection to our community…the silk flower will serve as a lasting reminder of the caring people who put the kits together,” explains Hammond George, who coordinated the project for UWTC.

Funding for the ‘Happy At Home’ kit program was provided through a generous grant from Kimberly-Clark’s Depend brand. Throughout the country, United Way and the Depend brand are coming together to promote healthy, active and independent living throughout an individual’s life, with a focus on volunteering.

“The volunteers from College Walk had the best time giving back to our community.  We are so glad that we were asked to participate in Day of Action,” says Valerie Tilson, Activity Director for College Walk Retirement Community.

United Way of Transylvania County empowers people to improve their lives.  Specific goals are for all residents to achieve their full academic potential, maintain a financially stable household, and live a healthy lifestyle.
