Living in a mobile home is fine. But not if you dream of owning your own house constantly. Robin Ellis wanted a new home for herself and her son Nathan, who lives with her. Her two daughters no longer live at home. She received an email from Don Rogers, who is with the United Way of Transylvania County Workforce Housing Coalition about the opportunity of possibly owning her own home through the Affordable Housing program. Agreements between Wesley Community Development Corporation, the United Way of Transylvania County Workforce Housing Coalition, St. Timothy United Methodist Church and Western Carolina Community Action (WCCA) made this a possibility for Robin as well as other families in Transylvania County through their volunteer led, self-help program.
Robin was fortunate. She already owned the property she lived on through an inheritance. Plus she met the requirement for home ownership: She was and continues to have a stable job. She worked hard to make sure she had good credit standing. When she was approved and since she works all of the time and could not actually work on building her home, which is suggested, she immediately began working on the plans for her home with the contractor and the Wesley Community Development Corporation. Plus with the wonderful work of many volunteers from St. Timothy, Little River Baptist Church and neighbors her home was built.
Robin qualified for a low interest USDA home loan that is a 30 year loan. She’ll be paying her mortgage off just like the rest of us and she is thrilled. It’s been hard work and now it is paying off for Robin and her family. We wish her well.
